  • apt 202's growing

Denise, since I'm not sure when I'll see you next, I wanted to at least share the good news via apt202 only news. Hopefully this provides some entertainment during your recovery.

The picture below is not of a distorted claymation or alien, but rather apt202's soon-to-be first Y chromosome addition. He's been incubating in the womb for 21 weeks now. Thanks to modern technology brought to us by GE and ayuko's favorite subject, genetics, we know that he inherited my overbite. I can only hope that my insurance will continue to cover orthodontics. Other than his jaw, he's a healthy, "normal" developing fetus.

Depending on what biology related subject he chooses to pursue, we'll need to have a molecule/bacteria/cell name for him.

  • conversations with scientists, part one

ayuko and i made the recent discovery that conversation is much more fluid and comprehensible between two scientists when lab-related vocabulary is used.

    CASE STUDY #1:
in a gchat between denise and ayuko about following up on a potential job lead:

Ayuko: i can go downstairs and have a chat with him
    haha hes in the office
    me: HAHA
i don't want to put you on the spot
and would that be weird and awkward?
Ayuko: haha i dunno what the protocol* is in these situations
    me: me neither
    what's normal etiquette
    haha protocol
    Ayuko: haha
    me: hahaha
    sounds like a xangable quote
Ayuko: lol i'm turning HR speak into something more familiar

*protocol: step-by-step procedure/conduct that is universally performed with little modifications per step; aka 'etiquette'

    CASE STUDY #2:
in a face-to-face discussion with a visiting student about a reserved and nontalkative postdoc in the lab:

me: what do you think about the nontalkative postdoc someday having her own lab?
visiting student: i'm not so sure if she has the personality. her personality is more...recessive*, and maybe not dominant enough.

*recessive: scientist-speak for B-type personality; antonym: dominant, A-type

    CASE STUDY #3:
while talking about our shared shelf in the -20degree freezer:

me: when i leave, i will be moving all of my stocks and reagents to the -80degree freezer.
postdoc: oh that's great for me! i will temporarily metastasize* over to your side of the shelf.

*metastasize: scientist-speak for uncontrolled movement to and invasion of additional unnatural and unassigned areas.

About Me

  • This site began in 2005 as an exposé of the Tiverton 202 gals…uncut and raw. "Together we have taken an oath to do our best at embarrassing one another through this site. The object is not to appear more refined or less clumsy than we really are. We agree to place our reputations on the line by making our humilation known publicly. With the help of xanga, we begin a year of bonding in 2005! welcome!! january marks a new year; june marks a new beginning. this serves as a tribute to our roomie madness--only time will tell. time will also tell us in future recollections here of the mural of memories we've created together." who's talkin'? ayuko (pink) denise (purple) jenn (green) mary (blue)
